Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap)

Medicare Supplements help pay the "gaps" in Original Medicare so you can enjoy more predictable costs and broad access to doctors nationwide.

Atlas Benefits is an independent, multi-carrier Medicare specialist helping you compare Medigap options with clarity and confidence.

Medicare supplements are standardized and we will provide you with quotes from multiple carriers but things to consider are:

  • Market Stability. How long have they been in the market and how will that impact future rate increases.

  • Do they offer a household discount?

  • Make sure you're comparing the same plan. Ex Plan G vs Plan G "Select"

  • What enrollment period are you in?

How Medicare Supplement Coverage Works with Original Medicare

With Medigap, Original Medicare remains your primary coverage. Medicare pays its share first, and then your Supplement plan helps cover eligible remaining costs based on the plan letter you choose.

  • Step 1: You use Original Medicare. You can typically see any doctor or hospital in the US that accepts Medicare.

  • Step 2: Medicare pays first. Medicare processes the claim and pays its approved portion.

  • Step 3: Medigap helps with the "gaps." Your supplement plan helps pay deductibles/coinsurance/copays depending on the plan.

  • Step 4: Add Part D for prescriptions. Most people add a separate Part D drug plan to cover medications.

Medicare Supplement Basics

Medicare Supplement plans, also called Medigap plans, help cover some of the out-of-pocket costs left behind by Original Medicare.

Works With Original Medicare

Medicare Supplement plans work alongside Original Medicare Parts A and B. Medicare pays first, then your supplement plan helps pay eligible remaining costs.

Helps Fill the Gaps

These plans can help pay for deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments that Original Medicare does not fully cover.

Standardized Plan Letters

Medigap plans are labeled by letters such as Plan G, Plan N, and Plan A. Benefits are standardized, but premiums can vary by insurance company.

Separate From Part D

Medicare Supplement plans generally do not include prescription drug coverage. Many people pair a Medigap plan with a separate Part D drug plan.

Freedom to Use Medicare Providers

With Original Medicare and a Medigap plan, you can generally see any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare.

Rates Can Vary by Carrier

Even though plan benefits are standardized, monthly premiums and rate increases can differ from company to company. Comparing carriers matters.

Choosing the right Medicare Supplement plan depends on your budget, health needs, travel habits, and how much cost predictability you want.

Understanding Medicare Supplement Premiums

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans have a monthly premium that varies based on several factors. Understanding what affects your cost can help you choose the right plan with confidence.

Monthly Premium

Medicare Supplement plans require a monthly payment in addition to your Medicare Part B premium. This is the cost of maintaining your coverage.

Plan You Choose

More comprehensive plans, like Plan G, typically have higher monthly premiums, while options like Plan N may offer lower premiums with some cost-sharing.

Age & Enrollment Timing

Your age and when you enroll can impact your premium. Many people get their best rates when they first become eligible for Medicare.

Where You Live

Premiums can vary by state and even by zip code, depending on local healthcare costs and insurance markets.

Insurance Company

Even though plan benefits are standardized, different insurance companies charge different premiums for the same plan.

Future Rate Changes

Premiums may increase over time based on age, inflation, and the claims experience of the plan. Choosing the right carrier can make a difference long-term.

The goal is not just to find the lowest premium today, but to find a plan that offers the best long-term value for your situation.

Medicare Supplement Alternatives

Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) are offered by private insurance companies and combine your Medicare Part A and Part B coverage into one plan. Many plans are zero premium and include additional benefits like Rx coverage, dental, vision, hearing, gym memberships and OTC.

MSA's combine a high-deductible Medicare Advantage plan with a savings account that Medicare funds each year to help pay for qualified medical expenses. You can use the money in the account to cover healthcare costs before your deductible is met and any unused funds roll over for future use.

PACE is a Medicare and Medicaid program that provides comprehensive medical and social services to help eligible seniors live safely in their homes instead of a nursing facility. It coordinates all care-including doctor visits, medications, therapy and transportation- through a local PACE organization.
